As winter ends, we finally find ourselves leaving this unusually awful cold and flu season behind us. Seeing as how the average child catches up to 10 colds each year, you probably already had to help your little ones work through a nasty cold or flu symptoms. While the worst of cold and flu season is hopefully behind us, we now have another season to deal with: allergy season. Each spring, people who suffer from allergies begin experiences itchy eyes, sneezes galore, and unpleasant coughs. Unfortunately, medicine can only do so much to help alleviate these symptoms. This article is going to discuss a few natural treatment options that can hopefully help you and your family make it through this allergy season.
Treating Seasonal Allergy Symptoms at Home
Vitamin C
It’s no secret that Vitamin C does wonder for your immune system. While many people think to increase their Vitamin C intake when they’re sick with a virus, many people don’t realize it can work well for allergies too. This vitamin is a natural antihistamine and antioxidant, which means it’s great for alleviating allergy symptoms. There are Vitamin C supplements available, or you can try simply increasing your Vitamin C intake through foods. Some foods rich in Vitamin C are citrus fruits, lemons, papaya, bell peppers, kiwi, and cantaloupe.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another thing that can help boost your immune system. Additionally, it helps break up mucus, which is commonly seen in those who suffer from allergies. By mixing apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and honey, you can significantly decrease allergy symptoms. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and a half-tablespoon of raw honey and drink up to three times a day. While it may not be the most pleasant concoction, it can do wonders for helping you breathe easier during allergy season.
Essential oils
Essential oils have become more popular over the past few years, and many people recommend them for treating allergy symptoms. Specific oils that alleviate allergy symptoms are eucalyptus and frankincense. These oils help to reduce inflammation and provide detox benefits. Whether it’s through a diffuser, being used in laundry detergents, or applying directly to the body, these oils can do wonders for making allergy season more bearable.
Keep Your Home Clean
Aside from these natural remedies, it’s also a good idea to do some serious spring cleaning before allergy season really settles in. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 80% of Americans are exposed to dust mites in their home each day, which can promote health problems associated with allergies. In cleaning your house, including the air ducts and vents, you can eliminate some of the air contaminants that may make allergy symptoms worse. A clean house is a safe haven when the outdoor environment is filled with sneeze-inducing pollen.
Allergy season can be absolutely dreadful. With a stuffy nose and watery eyes, it can be difficult to enjoy the nice weather spring has to offer. But hopefully, some of these remedies can help manage allergy symptoms so you and your family can enjoy the nice weather.
