The only bare bones I’ll ever want to see… are on a batch of cupcakes! These Halloween Bones Cupcakes were tons of fun to bake with my kiddos. Let me tell you, my toddler had a blast as I put together these sweet Halloween treats. I can’t wait to present it to all of our friends. I’m sure they’ll be impressed – and a little spooked (but that’s what Halloween’s all about, right?!).
DIY Halloween Bones Cupcake
It took me a couple of tries to get in the groove of making the candy bones. But you know what? Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to pipe them out by the dozen!
Ingredients
Chocolate cake mix + all ingredients to make it (you’ll want to make one dozen cupcakes – most cake mixes yield 24 cupcakes so you can cut all the ingredients in half)
- 1 ½ cups white candy melts
- 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- Violet gel food coloring
*Yields: One dozen decorated cupcakes
Instructions
- Prepare cupcakes and bake according to cake mix’s directions.
- Allow cupcakes to cool before decorating.
- Line a clean working surface with wax paper.
- In a bowl, microwave candy in 30 second intervals until completely melted.
- Scoop melted candy into a piping bag with Wilton #1 tip attached. (I usually order mine on Amazon)
- To create the bone candies, start by piping out a small heart/v-shape, then pull down to create a line and then pipe out an upside-down heart/v-shape.
- Repeat until about 120 bones have been piped out.
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk. These ingredients will make up the buttercream frosting.
- Once the buttercream starts to form, add violet gel food coloring and mix until completely tinted.
- Scoop buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton tip #12 attached.
- Frost each cupcake.
- Decorate each cupcake with about 10 bones each.
Serve and enjoy!
