The Perfect Cold Survival kit for kids
When my kids were babies, I learned quickly that if I were going to conquer this new parenting thing, I’d have to be prepared. Which is why I always had a diaper caddy in each room. It’s just one of those things you know; “it’s going to happen, might as well be prepared for it” The same goes for cold and flu when you have kids. Sooner or later, they will get it, and the best you can do is to be ready. Which is why a cold survival kit is a must when you have little ones. Below I’m sharing some of the items I keep in my kit along with some bonus tips for surviving the cold season.
Water
When dealing with a cold or the flu, staying hydrated is extremely important. A good idea is to keep two to three pre-filled water bottles in the fridge. That way you can just grab one as needed.
Tissue
Tissue, lots and lots of it! My kids have never gotten a cold that didn’t include a runny nose. Be sure to keep a box or two – or three, in your kit because you are going to go through them fast.
Something fun to pass the time
I usually keep a stack of their favorite books in an easily accessible basket. Both of my kids love being on the tablet. Having a cold is the perfect excuse to binge watch some of their favorite shows.
Favorite toys
My son is not much a toy guy, but he’s a die-hard fan of LEGO even more so when he’s not feeling well enough to play his video games. My daughter, on the other hand, has a box filled with toys but always goes for the same 2-3 plush toys. When’s she’s not feeling well; I keep them close by for her to snuggle with.
An extra blanket or two
When the kids are sick, they tend to want extra blankets. Lucky for me, I have throw covers all over the house. I know because I’m always the one picking them up from the floor.
Cough/Cold/Fever medicine
Although the cold and fever medicines are always kept in the medicine cabinet until needed, it is still an important item in my survival kit. Another item I keep around is the Helixia Cough Prospan. It’s a naturally sourced product that’s sucrose-free, dye-free, alcohol-free, and gluten-free. Helixia Cough Prospan syrup tastes like honey (although it doesn’t contain any honey). It’s clinically proven to help relieve a cough and loosens mucus & phlegm. Click HERE to learn more and to get an online coupon on certain Helixia products. To make sure this product is right for you always read and follow the label.
Other things to include in your kit
- Thermometer – Bonus for one that’s easy to use and reads the temperature quickly.
- Hand sanitizer- Make it a habit of using it. Especially during the cold and flu season.
- Humidifier- Which can help soothe cold and flu symptoms such as a sore throat, cough and a stuffy nose)
Bonus: The important thing to keep in mind
I call the cold season, the cold train. It always starts with either my son or his father, makes its way to my toddler and finally, when everyone is back to their regular selves, it makes its way to me. Sometimes I’m lucky, and it misses me completely! What I need to remember though is even while I’m dealing with the snot, the coughing and sometimes puking, I have to be sure I’m resting in between. Because sooner than later, I’m going to catch the cold train and the last thing we need is an unrested sick mommy!

Awesome suggestions you have there. I raised four and you are right on that like the chicken pox colds are going to share their way to everyone. I have never heard of Helixia Cough Prospan but then my children are grown with little ones of their own. I will pass this suggestion on to them though because it sounds healthier than some of the drugs on the market.

The cold train! lol I have ridden that train more times than I care to remember. You are smart to have a kit put together in advance. Now, why didn’t I think of that?!

Great tips! Almost like having a storm shelter kit and something I have never considered. I have always just run to see what we had in the medicine cabinet…and then usually to the store!

I definitely agree that this time of year is definitely cold and flu season so I like the idea of having a cold survival kit for kids, especially as their immune systems are lower. The cough syrup sounds ideal for the kit as well.
