I came across a blog today and there was a post called “If I had a million dollars”. It’s part of a special weekly trends “Finish that sentence Friday”. Pretty self-explanatory!
Today’s sentence is “If I had a million dollars, I…”
One of the blogger posted a video of Barenaked Ladies which has a song titled. Wait for it…” If I had a Million Dollars” Very catchy tune that had me smiling the whole time. Have a listen here: If I Had a Million Dollars – Pinch My Bluegrass: A Bluegrass Tribute to Barenaked Ladies
Now most of you that have been following my blog are aware that I’m facing a monster in my life. My good friend and mentor told me that I should start naming my monsters (yes plural, I have more than one monster). So far I have the “Debt Monster” and a few days ago I came face to face with a new one. It’s not really new, it had been lurking under the bed for sometime now. The “Doubt Monster” likes to creep out now and then, but more so lately (but that’s for another post). Here are the top 6 things I would do if I had a million dollars:
- Duh! Pay off my debts!!! Can we say “FREEEEEDOOOOMMM!!!!” *in my William Wallace voice without the head chopping that came after*
- Get my dream house with STORAGE!!! So that I can have more space for my hoarding!!
- Bring my mom to live with us in Canada! The last time I saw my mother I was 6 years old. My mom is currently in Haiti! Anyone that is familiar with immigration in Canada is welcome to message me. The “Doubt Monster” and the “Stress Monster” are trying to drive me mad!!!
- Put funds away for my son’s education.
- Open up a trust funds for my little cousins. I used to live with my uncle and his family. I love every single one of my cousins as if they were my own. So I want to be sure that they have everything they need and that when the times comes for them to go to college, they can!
- Go on a trip to South Korea with my sister and some friends. I don’t think my list is too farfetched, do you? =)
Now is your turn to play along! What do you do if YOU had a Million Dollars?

marielle says
Thanks Joanne! I hope I get achieve these things even without the 1 million dollars (although, having it would be LOTS of help lol)

The first thing I’d do is pay off debt. Then get a house and a new car. Nothing flashy. My house needs an extra room for an office/library. Then I’d take my son on a cruise! We went a few years ago and he’s been begging to do it again.
Megan says
I like naming the “monsters” in your life. I’m going to do this myself. And who knows…maybe I’ll blog about it too! Thanks for the inspiration.

First of all you shouldn’t doubt yourself and here’s why…. of all the blogs I read… and no BS… yours is the most engaging, authentic, and entertaining. THAT talent of yours is under used. You should really think about doing some writing on the side like for Odesk/eLance. All you’d need to do is show them this blog and they’d hire you. Build up your portfolio and feedback and eventually you’ll be picking and choosing your work (and pay). Writing creatively and conversationally seems to come naturally for you. Got it? Ok… moving on
If I had a million dollars…
I would already have been living my dream because it’s the process of getting there that opens the doors to your dreams along the way.
BUT to play along…
I’d take off for a whole year with my girlfriend and travel the world. I’d choose 12 of my favorite locations and spend one month in each so that I could really appreciate the people, the food, the culture, the history, and the language before moving on (I’d write a book about it with lots of photos – I’d make another million!)
Great content, great topic/question.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… you are a talent Marielle.
marielle says
This made me very happy. Thank you so much for your kind words and support!
Denise Patton says

Casa Vilora Interiors says
I love this post, as I do all your posts Marielle. I love how you are very open and honest and I feel like we have met in person. Lol.
If I had a million dollars I would upgrade my marketing and promotion strategy for my business. Completely renovate my studio, take a vacation and shopping trip in Paris (flea market). And buy my daughter the car of her dreams.
You mentioned college funds for your son…..do what I did over 12 years ago and buy a college fund or 529. It allows you to put away small amounts of money each month and that locks in the cost of college. So regardless of what you paid for the 529 it covers the entire cost when your son is ready for college (loose definition but kinda the jist) I hope you do come in to $1M
Yvonne B. says
I would take my entire family on a trip to the Carribbean. This would be the first thing I would do, then you know, a whole lot of other things would follow! LOL
Jennifer Clay says
Man, if I had a million dollars there would be so much I would do! Debts would be the first thing I took care of. Then I would straight out buy my house. Can you say no more rent?! I would buy myself and my husband a new car and get anything my babies wanted. Then I would take care of my mother in law and a few family members.
Tom Holmberg says
you out of anyone can make all these things happen without the million dollars. You got the right drive and energy to make all these things happen
