First off, this is not a how-to blog post. I may do one in the future, but I’m still shaky from the last few days of trying to move my content from one blog platform to another AND changing my domain name. I don’t want to freak anyone of you out but moving from Blogger to WordPress was NOT at all what I expected.
From Blogger To WordPress: Read this FIRST before doing the switch!
I think what did me in was ALL the information that is out there. So much information that at one point, I felt like pitching my laptop out the window. I didn’t. I love my laptop. Plus it’s not even my laptop…It’s for Demo (my SO).
Here’s a short list of the things I did NOT foresee when I got the bright idea of moving my content from Blogger to WordPress.
- The amount of time it would require to get everything done (from a newb’s point of view).
- A lot of my pictures were resized on the Blogger website. When I move my blog to WordPress.com a lot of the themes would either shrink the pictures are make them appear ginormous! There has to be an easy fix for this. Right?
- I was able to get my blogger domain name redirect to my new domain name (Ladymarielle.com). Somehow (not sure what I did wrong) but some of the links in my posts are getting 404 errors. So now I have about 75 posts to update with new links. (Joy!!!) For some strange reason (which I’m still trying to figure out), my old URLs (to a specific post) gets redirected to my new domain’s home page.
- All the new computer terms I knew nothing about. CSS, PHP, Meta tag to name a few. Let’s just say; I was incredibly overwhelmed.
Like everything in life, there are bad things, and there are some freaking AWESOME things! For me, that awesome thing is “SEO Plugin with WordPress.” Where have you been all my life? Now I know what “On-site SEO” means (yay me!!).
So far that is the ONE good thing about moving over to WordPress, but I’m sure that it will change when I’m a bit more familiar with my way around the platform. I’m looking forward to going back to my normal routine. As you can see the site is still under constructions. I’m hoping I can get everything up and running by the end of the week (finger crossed). Happy Blogging everyone!

Definitely not and that is why I paid someone to do it for me. It was worth every penny. No clue what Google Authorship is, but I got an email from them a while back saying I had it. I don’t know what to do with it, though.

I’ve considered switching but it seems like way too big of a task for my mind to handle and comprehend. I know when I’ve tried to alter the size of my blog, the photos would have to be resized so I would just change it back. Wish there was an easier way.

Everyone told me to go with WordPress – so I finally did. I’m super happy with the ease of use, but I must admit I hired a professional to initially get it set up for me. Hang in there, you will love it!

Wow! You did good despite the snags in the process. Can’t wait to see it finished. I moved mine myself over a year ago on the twenty eleven theme, so that may have been why it was a bit simpler. Also I didn’t change my domain name at the time. I recently did change domains and crashed my site for a day. It’s still not even working the way I intended 🙁 I will be redesigning both my blog and website soon, and I am hiring someone. I think the $900 they quoted is going to be money well spent. Hope you get it all done this week

It sounds like a right pain in the bum! I’m lucky that I started with WordPress, although I did have a previous blog on Typepad and decided it was easier to close it down than switch it over.

Wow that sounds very time consuming. Luckily you got it done so now you can enjoy wordpress! 🙂

I feel for you. Truly I do. I went through this myself 2 years ago when I made the switch. There is a lot to deal with. Which is why I will always recommend a new blogger bit the bullet and just start on WordPress. it is so much easier than to transfer later. I’m still sorting through the really old blog posts fixing them.
But now that I’ve been on WP for 2 years; It has definitely been worth all the headache. I have a lot more freedom, my site have a lot more traffic and sponsors take me more seriously. So it is very much worth it. Hang in there.

I have way to many darn page views to make the switch over to wordpress. I do have a worpress for my blog but it’s not directed to my domain. Not yet and I’m not sure I want to stay with the company I have my domain with go daddy. let’s just say ugg to redirecting. I have had the issue of redirecting my husband figured it all out over two times I called customer service and got confident with them I had to wait a week then took matters into my husbands hands lol he has a associates degree in computer networking so he knows a thing or two about this got to put his 40,000 dollar degree to use some how right lol yes he’s still looking for work in his field other then selling computers. I felt your frustration which is why I’m a tad concern about making the move from blogger to wordpress because I have over 450,000 page views and I have 21 readers lot’s of comments and such and I would hate to start from 0. Oh the starting over at 0 scares me lol so I haven’t done that yet.
I will be interested to see how the issues your having get fix I also will be intersted to see how your blog turns out. best of luck.

We registered our domain a few years ago but didn’t do the switch to WP from Blogger until this past December. It was a huge undertaking because we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose links that were already existing (IE from Pinterest). We did a lot of extra steps that weren’t necessary for a conversion but allowed us to maintain the things we wanted. That involved changing the shrug to match the Blogger URL, reformatting all the posts (yes, including pictures), adding tags and categories (since Blogger didn’t have both) as well as handling SEO for old posts. I wish I had switched long ago. We’ve been sharing some things we learned along the way and I hope you’ll stop by and check it out. http://www.sahmreviews.com/tag/blogger

Your illustration about resizing pictures is hilarious — but I’m laughing with you, not at you. I switched to WordPress years ago, thank goodness. It has gotten much more complicated since then. Nice to have so many options and so much control, but I can sure understand it would be overwhelming to a newcomer. Do check with the WordPress forums if you need help, have questions, etc. People there are very helpful and friendly and there’s tons of good information already posted.
