I’ve never been able to get rid of spare buttons. I figured I owed that to my underlying hoarding problem. But about six months ago I went to a church bazaar and came across a jar filled with white buttons (over 200) for 1$. So although I was there to make money, I ended up spending 1$ on the buttons and sneaking it back to our table without my bf knowing (he just doesn’t get it). So now I had 200+ buttons but wanted more! CRAVED more!!! So every time I went to a bazaar I looked for buttons! Bazaars are THE best place to find vintage buttons for dirt cheap (.50-$3). But it wasn’t enough. I only go to go to church bazaars once, sometimes twice a month and my NEED to acquire more buttons wasn’t being met. So I started looking for them at the dollar store. I told myself it was OK since it only cost 1$ sometimes 2$ (plus tax). Of course, each time I got out of the dollar store with a bill for 25$ or more, I was always surprised.
About a month ago, my dear sister bought me two sack of mixed color buttons from Walmart (she knows the way to my heart) and my son asked me what I’m going to do with them. Yea mom, what do you need those buttons for! So as a fun little game I thought we would sort them out per color together. We ended up having so much fun that day that I figured now was the time to bring out my other buttons that I had secretly been stashing away over the past few months. I was extremely happy with a number of buttons that I did have.
This weekend was spent sorting out buttons and putting away my crafts “stuff” (after one year of stockpiling them in my closet). It was interesting to see all the different kind of buttons that I have. I have to admit, though, after sorting out buttons for 2 hours, I couldn’t wait to be done with it. I have enough buttons…for now. A friend suggested I use them for arts and crafts so will most likely give that a go and see what cool DIY projects I can create with my buttons!

You can sew them onto the face of a pillow in a cluster to form a design. Or in a child’s room you can paint a tree mural on the wall and glue the buttons in clusters to form teh flowers or leaves on the trees….keep the colors fairly monochromatic
marielle says
The tree mural sounds fun! I may try that!

I used to save buttons too, probably something I got from my mother. I was going thru my “sewing” box not too long ago and came across some of my mother’s buttons. She died in 1979… I still have a part of her with me!! The funniest thing is that my daughter needed a button and was able to use one from my mother’s collection!!
marielle says
I wish I still had things that belong to my father that passed away. It’s great that you still had those buttons from so long ago =)

I don’t have anything that I collect. I’m not sure what I would do with a lot of buttons. I do have extra buttons from when I’ve bought shirts and sweaters. I can’t bring myself to throw them away. They’re in my sewing basket. Every once in a great while I do need one.
marielle says
lol Buttons is the only thing I collect. But After going over all my inventory I think I will have to slow down on the buying for a while lol

I would love to see what you create with the buttons! I used to make popsicle stick frames as a child and I would glue buttons on them and they looked awesome! 🙂 The blue ones are pretty!

There are so many cool things you can do with buttons….and you’ve got quite the collection. You can do monogrammed pillows using your buttons, or wall art like branches with flowers (using your buttons to make the flowers). Do share your projects with us

My mom used to have a big box of different buttons to sow in our clothes if a botton would fall. When I was a child I loved to go through it and arrange the buttons according to color, size, type, design, you name it, with my little sister.
There were some vintage buttons just like the ones in your pic.
I didn’t even remember how much I loved buttons until this post. Thank you very much, lol
MikiHope says
With the 2 and 4 hole buttons you could make necklaces and bracelets–start a new craze! Maybe sell them or donate them at one of the Church bazaars–hey you never know!

My daughters birthday theme was Lalaloopsy. We bought colored buttons from Walmart and then used them to decorate frames (we had special bday pics taken and used them as centerpieces). We also used them to decorate glass vases that we also used as decorations at her party. They turned out so cute!
